goBerkeley Automated Data Collection

As part of the goBerkeley pilot program, the City of Berkeley is testing ways to improve parking data collection. From Monday, September 22nd to Friday, September 26th, test vehicles will be mounted with sensors and will perform data collection runs through Downtown Berkeley, Southside Telegraph and the Elmwood. Results from these pilot runs will be used to determine the feasibility of automated parking data collection as well as assist the City in making a selection of the best possible system should the tests be succesful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the goal of this equipment testing?

The goBerkeley program depends on robust data on parking conditions - which can be expensive to collect. The City is currently testing equipment that may collect data automatically with lower costs and greater efficiency if the goBerkeley program continues.

What are the exact dates and times of the equipment test?

The test will occur between Monday, September 22nd and Friday, September 26th between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8:30 pm.

Where exactly will the equipment test be performed?

Generally, the route loops through Downtown, Telegraph/Southside, and down College Avenue to The Elmwood.

What type of data will be collected?

The City will be testing the ability of the equipment to detect the overall number of cars parked on a street and how long they have been parked there.

Who will be able to view the data?

City staff, and its contracted vendors with confidentiality clauses, are the only persons authorized to view the data.

What type of information will you have?

Information about vehicles along the test route may include: license plate numbers, size and shape of the vehicle, and duration of stay. This information will be stored only long enough to verify that the equipment is operational, and will be used for no other purpose. All vehicle information will be permanently deleted as soon as this verification is made or at the completion of the equipment test, whichever is sooner.

Can I receive updates about this test?

Yes! The City will continually update this web page with new information as it becomes available. In addition, you can sign up for updates on our mailing list and we can send you information about next steps for this equipment.
